Kentucky Medical Association Applauds House Health Services Committee for Advancing House Bill 134

The Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) released the following statement today following House Bill 134’s passage out of the House Health Services Committee. House Bill 134, sponsored by Rep. Moser, creates a prior authorization exemption program to ensure timely access to care and reduce administrative burdens on physicians and other providers. More than 90 physicians gathered in Frankfort on Wednesday to voice their support for the legislation.

We thank Chairwoman Kim Moser and the members of the House Health Services Committee for putting Kentucky patients first and advancing House Bill 134. This legislation will reduce unnecessary barriers that prevent Kentuckians from getting the timely care they need. Prior authorization reform has been a long-time priority for the Kentucky Medical Association and many other patient and provider organizations, and we urge the House to continue moving HB 134 forward in the remaining weeks of the legislative session.”

What Kentucky Physicians Have to Say
About Prior Authorization

  • “Any delay in care adds to the time my patients are in pain because diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are being delayed.”

  • “I have had so many patients denied access to their medications in a timely manner due to need for a PA. Too often, insurers are forcing us to choose a different medication which may not be as beneficial for our patient's health.”

  • “Several times each week I’m forced to change treatment plans from what I consider to be optimal for the patient because of prior auth related denials.”

  • “Elimination of this unnecessary burden would allow me to see and treat more people.”
